Watch Polishing (With A Careful Eye)

A little internet search revealed something quite interesting about the potential problems you could run into when it comes to cleaning your prized watch. When I performed my search for “watch polishing”, I found a seemingly endless number of web sites offering me cloths, buffs and waxes which guarantee my Rolex or Omega piece would be sparkling to the point of blinding. Impressive claims and I am sure that many of these products do exactly as they report too. Indeed it is not my intention to cast a shadow of doubt across the creams and sprays I encountered. No … BUT there is an important point to be made, something which is worth factoring in to the watch polishing equation: the human factor.

It is an unfortunate fact that the human race has yet to achieve perfection. The Utopia we strive for is constantly beyond our reach. Fallibility goes hand in hand with human endeavour. Give a person a host of materials and tools, and you can guarantee a host of finished pieces made from trial and error, with an emphasis on the latter. I recently read an article explaining how to polish the centre section of a Rolex two-tone bracelet. The author explained how careful precision could be used to fashion a watch polishing cloth around the tip of a cotton bud, then making sure you don’t touch the “brushed” section adjacent to the polished one, use brush strokes, not so hard, not too soft, not circular, not cross hatched and in line with the grain of the metal. Immediately I was aware of how many times the word “careful” was thrown about with ironic disregard. It is my guess that a novice attempting to perform these actions might inadvertently cause more damage than polishing.

In conclusion I would recommend asking the professionals to complete any watch polishing you need doing. That’s not to say that the discerning reader isn’t able to perform basic cleaning tasks; but let us put into context the fact you have probably paid a substantial amount of money to have a watch you are proud of, why not treat it with the respect it deserves to ensure you can be proud of it for years to come?
